OF COURSE the first matter of the morning is Baez objecting to Dr. Vass testimony! When in doubt and the truth be told, Baez and co. seem to cry foul! The d-team really needs to get a clue!
Dr. Vass is on the stand. He went over his qualifications and explained the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, also known as ‘BodyFarm’. These are the stages of decomposition:
Fresh
The fresh stage begins immediately after the heart stops beating. Blood is no longer being pumped through the body it drains to the dependent portions of the body, under gravity, creating a bluish-purple discoloration termed liver mortis or, more commonly, lividity. Shortly after death, within three to six hours, the muscular tissues become rigid and incapable of contraction which is known as rigor mortis. From the moment of death, the body begins losing heat to the surrounding environment, resulting in an overall cooling called algor mortis.
Once the heart stops, chemical changes occur within the body and result in changes in pH, causing cells to lose their structural integrity. The loss of cell structure brings about the release of cellular enzymes capable of initiating the breakdown of surrounding cells and tissues. This process is known as autolysis. Visible changes caused by decomposition are limited during the fresh stage, although autolysis may cause blisters to appear at the surface of the skin.
Oxygen present in the body is quickly depleted by the aerobic organisms found within. This creates an ideal environment for the proliferation of anaerobic organisms. Anaerobic organisms, originating in the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system, begin to transform carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, to yield organic acids and gases. The process of microbial proliferation within a body is referred to as putrefaction and leads to the second stage of decomposition, known as bloat.
Bloat
The bloat stage provides the first clear visual sign that microbial proliferation is underway. In this stage, anaerobic metabolism takes place, leading to the accumulation of gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and methane. The accumulation of gases within the bodily cavity causes the distention of the abdomen and gives a cadaver its overall bloated appearance. The gases produced also cause natural liquids and liquefying tissues to become frothy. As the pressure of the gases within the body increases, fluids are forced to escape from natural orifices, such as the nose, mouth, and anus, and enter the surrounding environment. The build up of pressure may also cause rupturing of the skin.
Intestinal anaerobic bacteria transform hemoglobin into sulfhemoglobin and other colored pigments. The associated gases which accumulate within the body at this time aid in the transport of sulfhemoglobin throughout the body via the circulatory and lymphatic systems, giving the body an overall marbled appearance.
If insects have access, maggots hatch and begin to feed on the body’s tissues. Maggot activity, typically confined to natural orifices and masses under the skin, causes the skin to slip and hair to detach from the skin. Maggot feeding, and the accumulation of gases within the body, eventually leads to post-mortem skin ruptures which will then further allow purging of gases and fluids into the surrounding environment. Ruptures in the skin allow oxygen to re-enter the body and provide more surface area for the development of fly larvae and the activity of aerobic microorganisms. The purging of gases and fluids results in the strong distinctive odors associated with decay.
Active Decay
Active decay is characterized by the period of greatest mass loss. This loss occurs as a result of both the voracious feeding of maggots and the purging of decomposition fluids into the surrounding environment. The purged fluids accumulate around the body and create a cadaver decomposition island. Liquefaction of tissues and disintegration become apparent during this time and strong odors persist. The end of active decay is signaled by the migration of maggots away from the body to pupate.
Dry Stage
During the dry stage, the resurgence of plant growth around the CDI may occur and is a sign that the nutrients present in the surrounding soil have not yet returned to their normal levels. All that remains of the cadaver at this stage is dry skin, cartilage, and bones, which will become dry and bleached if exposed to the elements. If all soft tissue is removed from the cadaver, it is referred to as completely skeletonized, but if only portions of the bones are exposed, it is referred to as partially skeletonised.
Also the temperature, water, ph and oxygen play a large part in decomposition.
He stated that the chloroform levels were very high and Dr. Vass and Dr. Weiss were SHOCKED at the high level of chloroform found in the carpet. To find out the level in the carpet, they removed the carpet from the can and placed it in a plastic bag and left for 2 days. The shock came from not seeing such high levels in a car that had decomp in it in 20 years.
Dr. Vass is very passionate about his job and what he does, you can tell. He gets excited when he talks about the work being done, and work that has been done.
When he opened the can he jumped back, he could not believe that little can could hold such an odor of decomposition. In the scrapings from the tire well, Vass stated that the scraping showed decomposition and chloroform.

Michael Vincent was next on the stand. He is from CSI OCSO, he is the assistant Supervisor. The first air tests were done by putting a syringe in the trunk through he trunk seal, [closed]. This did not work and the next test was done with the trunk open slightly and the needle stuck in and air sucked into the syringe. He was accompanied by Dr. Michael Sigman, from the University Central Florida National Center of Forensic Science. Now a little info on Michael Sigman: website
Dr. Sigman, has written at least 5 published papers. One of which is Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometric analysis of explosives: RDX adductions LINK
I assume that Dr. Sigman will be considered qualified since he has written an article and I would assume it has pictures! This particular publication was published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health!
On 23 July 2008 he was present with Dr. Sigman, they hung a carbon filter and another filter in the car trunk area and closed the trunk. They left the filters in the trunk for 40 minutes, then collected the filters.
on 29 August 2008, Vincent received from Dr. Vass a square box with tubes connected to it. He attacked test tubes to the tubes on the box and took air samples of the car and the garage. This was done on 29 August 2008.
Defense:
I should have stopped immediately after Baez started. First words out of Media hound Baez were, when you processed the car for blood the media was there, it was caught on tape. Anyways, Vincent said that he did not call the media and that they only caught the car and the bay area where the car was, they did not get any of the processing of the car. Guess this really ticked off Baez because he [Baez] claimed it was shown Nationally.
Baez also tried to say that there were many times that samples were taken and tried to insinuate that they failed, but Vincent said that he did NOT take the air samples on 17 and 23 July 2008, those were tests taken by Dr. Michael Sigman. Vincent said it was the first time he had heard it being done and it was new, not an experiment. Vincent did say that he observed the sampling of air samples taken.
So what I got out of all Baez questions, is that Vincent didn’t take the air sample of the car on 17 and 23 July 2008 with the equipment that Dr. Vass sent, but took the sample on 29 August 2008 and Dr. Vass STILL got the readings from the car, and Baez is not happy that it wasn’t completed when the car was at one of it’s nastiest states, on 17 July 2008!
Baez started the morning off upsetting the Judge wanting to get a ‘Frye‘ hearing for Karen Korsberg Lowes qualifications. The Judge denied the mini ‘Frye‘ hearing, and said you had no problems with her qualifications in the ‘Frye‘ hearing if I remember correctly. Seems like when there is someone who can ‘Frye’ Casey, there is a need for the defense to show their dorkness and cry foul and want something else to happen.
Karen Korsberg-Lowe from the FBI is on the stand. Baez had a fit about her qualifications. She has had more schooling than Baez. He is really worried about her testimony, I guess the deathband hair is going to put Casey to sleep.
We went over how the hair is examined, and excluding. The characteristics of the hair. She talked about that you can tell how hair has come out of the head. If it fell out of if it is pulled out!
Hair Chart:
Stretched hair, there is pigment all the way through the hair, and is pulled out. Hair is kept in the scalp by what is called Internal root sheet.
Club Hair, is naturally shed, it has pigment production and was shed by itself, has no decomp
Postmortem band: Tapered darken and comes to a point, shows decomp
Brush like: red/brown and later show stages of decomposition

She went over the hair and the death banding of Caylee’s hair. Item Q-12 found in the trunk was the numbered hair that had the death banding on it. Remember this is the hair that was found in the trunk. I am sure Casey was just as surprised as we were that Caylee would go and leave this hair in her car, to make it look like she killed Caylee!
The hair found in Q12 was hair from a Caucasian light to medium brown and 9 inches long, had apparent decomposition, darkened band and was consistent with postmortem root band. This hair was seen in 3 dimension.
This is one of 11 hairs examined and was not compared against each other hair. This hair showed similarities to Caylee and had no similarities to Casey. The death band part of the hair was preserved and the extra was sent out for mitochondrial DNA [mtDNA].
Defense:
It comes down to the defense trying to discredit, yea I know, the FBI.
He asked about the FBI changing their position of microscopic hair analysis as relates to identifying to an individual? Hair examination has never been a means for positive identification, but I guess this is why the part of the hair that did not have death bands on it was sent off for DNA testing!
